Illustrating widely divergent experiences acquired in different countries, case studies explain leadership training programmes and describe the personal educational background and experiences of actual leaders. Studies communicate experiences with either a national health care programme, a sample locality within a national health care system, or a specific and noteworthy project. On the basis of these experiences, subsequent chapters attempt to identify and clarify the many distinct functions of leadership and to set forth various requirements for leadership development. Defining leadership as an attribute of managers, the book concludes with abundant evidence that training, organizational structure, and social environment can enhance the leadership capability of any person.
