Presents detailed information on the operation and achievements of the Expanded Programme on Immunization in the eleven countries of WHOs South-East Asia Region. The book marks the most comprehensive progress report on immunization, by country and for each vaccine-preventable disease, ever compiled for this region. Chapters outlining global and regional efforts to intensify immunization are supplemented by extensive reports on activities within each country. Tables, charts and interpretive text are used to indicate the extent of progress achieved, the immunization strategies that succeeded or failed, the public information and health education initiatives undertaken, and the types of training and research conducted in the country. The most extensive section of each country report is devoted to the identification and detailed analysis of operational problems. Examples include the shortage of spare parts for the repair of donated refrigerators, the difficulty of transporting vaccination supplies in locally available boats, high drop-out rates between sequential doses of vaccines, and the frequent failure to immunize children suffering from minor ailments.
