A broad discussion of social attitudes and health issues surrounding the breakdown of families in European countries. Emphasis is placed on the identification of those areas where services from either formal or informal health systems can provide the greatest support during various types and stages of family crisis. The impact of the enormous increase in divorce and separation observed throughout Europe is outlined with special attention given to the reactions of children in different situations and in different age groups. A section devoted to the prevention of family breakdown identifies three distinct stages of intervention to provide families with positive help. The booklet also describes periods when families are at the greatest risk of breakdown or crisis and points out the unique qualifications of community or family nurses and midwives to provide assistance during these critical periods.
