Summary, etc. |
Reviews recent progress in international efforts to combat the huge scale of suffering caused by tropical diseases. Prepared by the UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), the book concentrates on progress made in controlling the Programmes six target diseases: malaria, schistosomiasis, filariasis, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and leprosy. Though work supported or coordinated by TDR is emphasized, the report also considers advances in any area of academic or industry research that may produce new tools for control. Throughout, an effort is made to illustrate the diversity of approaches, whether involving the tools of molecular biology or the use of insecticidal paints, needed to match the complexity of these difficult diseases. Information is presented in fourteen chapters. The opening chapters provide state-of-the-art reports for each of TDRs six target diseases. A brief description of the disease and its public health significance is followed by detailed information on current strategies for control, problems with these strategies, and the lines of research beng pursued by TDR to solve these problems at the lowest possible cost and in the shortest possible time. Subsequent chapters summarize new work on integrated chemotherapy for African trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, and leishmaniasis, and describe progress in the biological control of vectors. The remaining chapters profile TDR involvement in social and economic research, research capability strengthening, and the development of new drugs, vaccines, and other tools for control. |
