En los últimos decenios, la población urbana de la mayor parte de los países en desarrollo ha experimentado un crecimiento sin precedentes. Sin embargo, no se ha hecho mucho para dotar a los hogares y las vecindades en que vive esa población, cada vez mayor, de los servicios e instalaciones esenciales para una vida sana: agua corriente, eliminación de los desechos domésticos y humanos, drenaje del agua de lluvia y superficial, caminos de acceso practicables en todo tiempo y atención de salud y servicios de urgencia. En esta obra se exploran las actuales tendencias de la urbanización, los efectos de esas tendencias en el medio físico y social, y las repercusiones de ese medio sobre la salud infantil. Se intenta crear una mayor conciencia de las consecuencias graves y generalizadas que tiene para la salud el deterioro de las condiciones ambientales causado por una urbanización demasiado rápida y promover un amplio examen de políticas y medidas que puedan mejorar la situación. |
