A concise overview of current knowledge on fungal diseases in Europe, including available methods for diagnosis and treatment and possibilities for prevention. In view of the many complexities and problems surrounding the fields of theoretical and practical mycology, the book attempts to give the non-mycologist clear criteria for recognizing the clinical problems caused by these organisms, obtaining an accurate diagnosis, and prescribing the most appropriate therapeutic agent. Though a wide range of organisms and diseases is considered, the most extensive information centers on common mycoses associated with invasive fungal infections, including Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Aspergillus spp. The most extensive chapters present detailed clinical information on the immunopathology of fungal diseases, including mycoallergoses, methods and techniques for diagnosing both common and exotic fungal infections, and current therapeutic possibilities, including advice on several new antifungal drugs. |
