An unprecedented 33-country analysis of the medical and support services available to, and utilized by, European women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. Prepared by experts from several disciplines, including psychology, the report describes and interprets the results of surveys, interviews, meetings and consultations held over a five-year period. Chapters describe the official services, alternative services, and information and evaluation services that surround pregnancy and birth care in Europe. The study also serves to pinpoint areas where scientific knowledge is inadequate, where costly procedures are being increasingly performed despite lack of a scientific rationale, and where painful interventions of no proven value are nonetheless used on a routine basis. The final chapter draws a number of important conclusions about the quality of services for women and their babies in European countries.
