An analysis of data, collected from European countries, concerning the provision of mental health services, the personnel manning them, and the organization of the various service systems. The availability of a similar study conducted in 1972 allows the present publication to discern several significant changes in the organization and provision of services for the care and treatment of the mentally ill. Focusing on 10 specific indicators of progress, the report gives evidence of a declining role for the larger psychiatric institutions as well as an increasing tendency for patients with acute mental illness to be managed through outpatient services.
