Maternal care for the reduction of perinatal and neonatal mortality :

Maternal care for the reduction of perinatal and neonatal mortality : a joint WHO/UNICEF statement. = Rôle des soins maternels dans la réduction de la mortalité périnatale et néonatale : document commun OMS/FISE - Geneva : World Health Organization, 1986. - 22 p.

A statement of the basic principles of maternal care formulated by a joint WHO/UNICEF committee. The statement takes its force from the important, yet inadequately appreciated, impact that the health and nutritional status of pregnant women and the quality of care during pregnancy and delivery can have on rates of infant death. The booklet first considers the causes of neonatal and perinatal mortality and the main factors involved. The next section provides a listing and brief description of interventions that use the principles of primary health care to reduce perinatal and neonatal mortality. All proposed strategies are cost-effective, feasible, and known to create both immediate and long-term improvements.
