A report on the health situation in the eleven countries of the WHO South-East Asia Region during 1985-1990. The report has two parts. The first provides a detailed analysis of the main health-related trends, strategies, successes, and common problems observed during the reporting period. This analysis covers both the region as a whole and the situation reported in individual countries. The first part also includes a chapter illustrating, with numerous charts and tables, trends for each of the main diseases and other health problems seen in this part of the world. Although morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases are noted to be increasing, the report cites a number of signs of progress. These include a decline in overall infant mortality rates, marked improvements in life expectancy at birth, a dramatic increase in immunization cover, with a corresponding drop in the incidence of diphtheria and pertussis, and strengthened involvement of communities in primary health care. The second part provides highly detailed profiles of health conditions and trends in each of the eleven countries. For each country, data on a wide range of indicators are presented and discussed in order to show the extent to which countries have been successful in their efforts to reach the goal of health for all.
