Online resources: Abstract: Elaborates the WHO global strategy for extending health care coverage in keeping with the basic right of all humans to enjoy the many benefits of health, economic productivity, and social activity made possible by advances in medical knowledge. The opening chapter cites bleak statistics, expressed as morbidity and mortality rates for preventable diseases, that illustrate the great disparities that exist between the level of health care available in developed and developing countries. The remaining chapters indicate the broad lines of action to be taken in the health sector and in related social and economic sectors and describe ways in which countries can develop their health systems on the basis of primary health care. The strategy also specifies intersectoral activities that reinforce one another and thus contribute to human and health development.
