Presents and discusses the findings of a major collaborative study of mental health services in Europe. The study, which involved 21 pilot study areas in 16 countries, was designed to develop standardized systems for data collection and reporting, to establish norms and indicators for greater comparability of data, and to use these data to determine the effectiveness of different patterns of service applied to different patient groups and disease categories. Conducted over a decade, the study has resulted in the first detailed and reliable description of the development of mental health services in Europe.
