520 3 _aA complete report on the objectives, design, and findings of a four-country, cross-national study focused on the health and socio-economic aspects of aging in Fiji, Malaysia, the Philippines, and the Republic of Korea. The study, which represents one of the first efforts t obtain data on aging in developing countries, was carried out with the aim of helping authorities to identify health and social problems related to aging so that appropriate health care and social programmes can be planned and implemented. Following a description of the research design, instruments, and survey methodology, the authors describe findings for each of the four countries on the demographic profile of the aged, their physical health and functional ability, mental health, use of health services, living conditions, and social participation. The significance of these findings is further extended through a comparison of selected results with those from a previous European study.
