520 3 _aPresents arguments, ideas, and technical advice that can help developing countries find ways to provide spectacles at low cost. The book draws many of its arguments from recent experiences demonstrating that local production of spectacles is feasible, requires a relatively small investment, depends upon a minimum of imported materials, and can help stimulate technical development. Readers are introduced to the prevalence of different eye defects in different age groups, the advantages of early detection and correction, and the principal target groups that would benefit most from low-cost spectacles. Simple inexpensive technologies are then described for frame manufacture, lens production, assembly and edging. While items that must be imported are clearly identified, emphasis is placed on ways of keeping costs to a minimum and of conserving foreign exchange.
