Organized as a series of country reports, the book provides a picture of the ways in which the countries of Europe try to protect their people from foodborne disease, to prevent the adulteration of foods, and to ensure that food is safe and of the quality, purity, and nature expected by consumers. The main part of the book consists of surveys of food safety legislation and its administrative enforcement for each of 32 countries. Each country report opens with brief information on the government, principal crops and other food products, the importance of agriculture to the overall economy, and whether the country is a net importer or exporter of food. The most extensive sections summarize food control laws, explain measures of enforcement, and identify the responsible governmental agencies. Details range from information on food inspection and analytical practices to legislation covering the control of premises, hiring of food handlers, labelling, advertising and marketing, and information to consumers as well as provisions for the prosecution of offense.
