Chapters describe the official services, alternative services, and information and evaluation services that surround pregnancy and birth care in Europe. The study also serves to pinpoint areas where scientific knowledge is inadequate, where costly procedures are being increasingly performed despite lack of a scientific rationale, and where painful interventions of no proven value are nonetheless used on a routine basis. The final chapter draws a number of important conclusions about the quality of services for women and their babies in European countries
