Trends identified include progress in the development of health systems, improvements in access to basic health services, declining infant mortality rates, and a steady reduction in deaths from vaccine-preventable diseases. Key health problems in the region include persistent loss of life from malnutrition, infectious diseases, and other preventable causes, increasing rates of injury and disability caused by accidents, and increases in diseases related to aging populations, changing lifestyles, and growing industrialization.
