Because of their broad pesticidal efficiency spectrum and low costs, PCP and its salts have been widely used as algicides, bactericides, fungicides, herbicides, and molluscicides with a variety of applications in the industrial, agricultural, and domestic fields. Though some of these uses have been banned or restricted in several developed countries, human exposure continues to be of concern because of possible health hazards associated with the indoor application of wood preservatives or paints containing PCP. A section devoted to sources of human and environmental exposure concentrates on levels of PCP emitted during industrial production, with tables illustrating production levels, production capacities, and major commercial uses in selected countries. The report gives particular attention to occupational exposure occurring during the treatment of lumber in sawmills and treatment plants and exposure to treated wood during carpentry and other wood-working activities. Non-occupational exposures are also considered ER -
