The report opens with a discussion of recent research in this area, emphasizing conceptual and methodological problems encountered in the design of assessment instruments. Against this background, the authors describe the development of the Subjective Well-being Inventory (SUBI), its testing in different languages in different parts of India, and its subsequent refinement. The inventory, which is restricted to 40 items, is presented and discussed in the third chapter. Items in the inventory correspond to eleven general areas of assessment, including such factors as confidence in coping, family and social support, mental mastery over self and environment, expectation-achievement harmony, perceived ill-health, and deficiency in social contacts. The book concludes with a discussion of how the inventory can be used in the counselling of patients, including assessment of the patient's capacity to cope with incurable disease.
