Description: 75 pISBN: 9290211318Subject(s): Maternal health services | Child health services | Eastern Mediterranean | Maternal and Child HealthNLM classification: WA 310Abstract: Sets out guidelines for improving maternal and child health in countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region, an area where high rates of maternal deaths continue unchecked and infant mortality rates remain alarmingly high. Emphasis is placed on both immediate and long-term measures that can be used to integrate programmes for maternal health, child health, and family planning into primary health care. Practical measures for improving nutrition, immunization, and the control of diarrhoeal disease are also presented and explained. In nine chapters, the book provides an overview of the magnitude of the problem in this region, an account of factors responsible for high rates of mortality and morbidity, and a source of well-informed advice on what can be done to achieve immediate improvements. While noting that both poverty and female illiteracy are powerful determinants of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, the book urges governments to give highest priority to the control of factors that are known to be an immediate and direct cause of preventable deaths.
