Drawing upon a wealth of first-hand technical and practical experiences in the countries concerned, the book serves to characterize the current malaria situation in terms of the wide range of factors that have shaped epidemiological patterns in the past. The objective is to aid the design of control programmes based on a sound understanding of the epidemiological behaviour of malaria as it varies according to country and to different ecological zones within a country. The book has two main parts. The first reviews the malaria situation and the development of control programmes for each of the 9 malarious countries in the region. Country profiles also include a discussion of reasons for the resurgence of malaria and an analysis of technical and administrative constraints impeding the smooth development of programmes. The second part, concerned with the current epidemiological status of malaria, provides a detailed review of the socioeconomic, political, sociological, cultural, and behavioural factors that have influenced the changing epidemiology of malaria
