The aim was to evaluate physicians' current role in environmental health, and the specific needs for and benefits of their involvement. The participants paid special attention to questions about environmental medicine as a separate discipline and the effects of its further development, if any, on clinical practice, health care systems, and medical education and training. The participants described physicians' role in environmental health: to assess, investigate, diagnose, monitor and treat environmentally related disorders, and to help to prevent, control or correct environmental hazards that lead to them. The participants also drew conclusions and made recommendations on the definition of and training in environmental medicine, the need to include environmental health in medical education, and research.
