Contributions come from physicians, epidemiologists, virologists, lawyers, and experts in public health. The first and most extensive part of the book features original articles documenting the epidemiology of AIDS and HIV infection in Canada, the USA, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Cuba, the Caribbean, and Venezuela. Reports on public education, legal and ethical considerations, risks of perinatal infection, and procedures for serodiagnostic tests are also included. To facilitate future predictions, the second part of the book collects expert commentaries on projection and forecasting methods centered around the controversial view that current AIDS projections may be too high. The final part of the book assembles a number of statements, policy guidelines, and consensus reports issued by both the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization. Of particular importance are statements concerning criteria for HIV screening programmes, an assessment of the neuropsychiatric consequences of HIV infection, and guidelines for dealing with the difficult issues surrounding AIDS in the workplace.
