Summary, etc. |
A critical appraisal of the work of WHO during the 1992-1993 biennium. Analytical in its approach, the book serves as both a record of specific activities of WHO and an evaluation of the extent to which these activities are supporting the overriding strategy of health for all. Key achievements during the biennium included the development of a new global strategy for health and environment, enhanced technical and managerial support to countries in greatest need, the development of several new clinical products for use in family planning and in the control of tropical diseases, and significant progress in the eradication of poliomyelitis, the eradication of dracunculiasis, and the elimination of leprosy. The report also shows how the Organization is responding to urgent threats to health, such as the resurgence of malaria, widespread malnutrition, and the relentless global spread of AIDS and tuberculosis, and what steps it is taking to safeguard people's health in the face of conflicts and disasters in many parts of the world. The opening chapters describe general programme development and management, discuss progress in implementation of the health-for-all strategy, and consider the extent to which health systems are being reorganized in keeping with the principles of primary health care. Major chapters provide a detailed assessment of successes and obstacles for each main programme, moving from such areas as the promotion of environmental health to advances in the prevention and treatment of diseases. Other chapters review health trends in the six geographical regions of WHO. The report concludes with several annexes giving details of WHO membership, meetings, relations with other organizations, and a full index. |
