Presents and assesses the types of training required in European countries for 23 medical specialities and 13 subspecialities. The book has two main parts. The first provides a general description of graduate medical education for each of 30 European countries. Country reports are presented according to a common format covering general arrangements, stages and levels of specialization, the content and duration of training, organization and supervision, mechanisms for the assessment of facilities, and criteria for certification. Common trends identified include measures to reduce the output of medical schools, efforts to relate specialist curricula to the country's predominant health problems, and the emergence of general practice and family medicine as specialities in their own right. The second half of the book consists of two series of detailed tables. The first gives a country-by-country summary of specialities taught and the related training requirements. The second series of tables, organized according to speciality, shows how requirements for a given speciality differ from country to country in terms of years of training, inclusion of internship, and type of examination needed for certification.
