WHO Expert Committee on Malaria [meeting held in Geneva from 9 to 17 September 1985] : eighteenth report. - Geneva : World Health Organization, 1986. - 104 p. - World Health Organization technical report series ; no. 735 .

A report on the global malaria situation, the many complex factors responsible for lack of progress in its control, and the equally numerous changes necessary to secure enduring improvements. Emphasis is placed on the importance of making anti-malaria action an integral part of primary care. Noting the key importance of local variations in malaria epidemiology that have recently come to light, the book argues for a stratification of the malaria problem based on the characterization of epidemiological zones in terms of their main determinants. To aid the reorientation of malaria programmes along these lines, the book proposes several indicators that can be used to identify the intensity of the local problem and evaluate alterations in the malaria situation caused by either antimalaria operations or coincident natural changes in the behaviour of the disease. Other sections cover strategies for the education and training of health manpower, discuss the implications of recent technological advances in diagnosis, chemotherapy, and vector control, and outline relevant new findings from laboratory and field research.
